Stroud MP Siobhan Baillie welcomed female students from SGS Berkeley Green University Technical College to parliament.
The young women all have a passion for STEM subjects and were in Westminster alongside other UTC students who form the Baker Dearing Educational Trust’s ‘Founding20 board’.
The event was the brainchild of Berkeley students who asked to come to parliament following a visit by Siobhan to the college last year with former education secretary Lord Baker.
Other MPs joined Siobhan for a Q&A session. MPs discussed a day in the life, what ministers and shadow ministers do and their support of technical education.
In turn, the students shared their UTC experiences.
“More and more women are going into what were traditionally male roles in engineering and the sciences and this is something I support as do many of my colleagues,” said Siobhan.
“But the numbers are still low in comparison with men and so events like this that raise awareness that women can and should study STEM subjects are so welcome.
“The students were just brilliant, bright and committed and ready to take on the world. I thank them for asking to come to the event and for spending time talking about what we do and telling us what they do.”
