Stroud MP Siobhan Baillie has given a shout out in the House of Commons to Brian Hewlett after he celebrated 50 years as a special constable in the town.
Siobhan asked for a debate on special constables during Business Questions with commons leader Penny Mordaunt last week.
The senior cabinet minister, famous for her impeccable support for The King and carrying a sword for hours during the Coronation, also praised Brian for his service and hoped he had ‘a good old knees up’ to celebrate the milestone.
Siobhan told MPs: “I had the pleasure of attending a surprise party for Special Constable Brian Hewlett at the Sub Rooms.
“Brian has undertaken 50 years of public service as a special constable in Stroud - 50 years of volunteering alongside his work and family commitments - and thankfully, he will continue.
“All six Gloucestershire MPs, the police and crime commissioner Chris Nelson, and chief constable Rod Hansen are huge champions for special constables.
“We know what they do locally and around the country. Will my right honourable friend consider whether Parliament can hold an event or debate to show support for that vital part of our police force?”
In reply the leader of the house said: “I am sure that I speak for all members of this House when I say thank you, Brian, for a life- time of service to your community.
“What an achievement; what a service. It is an incredibly important role, not just for the knowledge that those individuals build up in their communities, but for the trust and rapport that they build.
“I think that that would be an excellent subject for a debate. I hope that Brian and all his colleagues will be having a good old knees-up this week.”
