The Wedding Industry
I visited the beautiful Eastington Park this morning to find out more about the impact of Covid on the wedding and events industry.
This sector is usually hugely profitable for the U.K. but now desperately needs some attention from the Treasury.
There are thousands of couples & families who were looking forward to getting hitched this year in our stunning Stroud, the Valleys. They have had their plans ruined by the virus & the majority are waiting until next year to get married now. This destroys income for workers in this sector & removes dates for couples who were hoping to wed next year.
It is easy to understand that the venues & their staff lose out but the unseen consequences are 100s of local businesses who cater for events, the marquee companies, hospitality, florists and retail amongst many others who are barely working this season. Many have received government support in one form or another but the loss of an entire years trade needs to be considered without delay given the reality of the coming winter months.
I’ve been raising points about this on behalf of local businesses for months. The government is being asked to look at sector specific support as the furlough scheme ends next month. This is sensible but there needs to an understanding of the urgency, together with a road map for getting to larger safe events.
