As part of DEFRA’s recently launched Water Plan, the Secretary of State announced that she is aiming to change the law to increase the scope and maximum amount the Environment Agency (EA) can secure in penalties for water companies for damaging the environment, with the preferred option being unlimited penalties.
A national consultation has been launched to gather views on the EA’s ability to take action on environmental offences and the suggestion of removing the cap to enable unlimited financial penalties.
The quality of our waters is something I care deeply about and I look forward to learning the result of the consultation in due course.
